Our extensive facilities, both within the department
and across the University, are among the finest available.
Through University support and support awarded to individual
researchers from the National Institutes of Health, National
Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency,
Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and American
Cancer Society and many other agencies, the Department
of Microbiology at Ohio State University provides the
most modern technology for life-science research.
Our department occupies 43,000 square feet in the
Biological Sciences Building and in the new, multimillion
dollar Riffe Research
Center housing state-of-the-art laboratories and
equipment. The department operates
specialized services including computer-controlled
fermentation and the production of monoclonal antibodies.
Instrumentation and facilities available to all
researchers within the department include housing
and care for
research animals, ultracentrifuges, liquid scintillation
counters, high pressure liquid chromatographic
equipment, constant-temperature rooms, media preparation
and
glassware washing services, a photography center,
PCR amplification
machines and a gel imaging system.
Other facilities available to researchers include
electron microscopy and analytical services such as
NMR, GC mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, and a variety
of computing systems, ranging from personal computers
to a Cray Y-MP/864 supercomputer. Each laboratory in
the department is linked through a campus-wide network
to several mainframe computers permitting access to
programs that include the Wisconsin
GCG DNA sequence
analysis program and the Lexis/Nexis search system.
The College
of Biological Sciences operates a Computational
Biology Facility for studies on protein and nucleic
acids structures.
The University
Libraries System at Ohio State University
comprises over 36 individual libraries that in total
hold over 4 million print volumes. Ohio State University
has long been recognized as a pioneer in the application
of computer technology to library service. Our computers
provide rapid access to information on the location
and availability of books, periodicals, and audiovisual
materials. Nowhere is this access more evident than
in the new Pharmacy/Biological Sciences library, which
occupies 21,000 sq. ft. and includes many computer
workstations. This library, housed within the biological
sciences complex, boasts subscriptions to more than
1,500 journals and contains more than 120,000 volumes.
Libraries in the physical sciences, agriculture and
medicine augment the extensive journal collections,
reference sources, monographs, and texts available
to researchers at Ohio State University.
NEW: The Plant-Microbe Genomics
Facility. This facility is to serve the entire Ohio
State University
as well as the researchers in the state of Ohio and
beyond, by providing resources in order to study
genomes from DNA sequence to protein expression.
