(…including Departmental policies and FAQs)
(MIN. 40 hrs. at 300 level or above)
Undergraduate Programs | Sample Curriculum | Microbiology Handout
NOTE: The majority of students who major in Microbiology are working toward a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree for this major is identical to the B.S. except for the math requirement (see below).
Part A. Required Prerequisites (and/or supplementary requirements):
- Biology 113 (H115), 114 (H116);
- Math 148, 150, 151, 152*;
- Chemistry 121, 122, 123, 251, 252, 245 or 254;
- Physics 111 (131), 112 (132), 113 (133)
*Math 152 is required for B.S. degree but not for B.A degree
Part B. Major Program (Core Requirements and other Major Courses)
- The major consists of 40 quarter hours of approved courses.
- A minimum grade of "C-" is required in each course counted toward the 40 major hours.
- Any student failing to obtain at least a C- after repeating a course must petition the Microbiology Department Curriculum Committee for permission to take the course a third time.
- A minimum grade point average of 2.00 (“C”) in the 40 majors hours is required for graduation.
Major Core Requirements (Substitutions are rarely if ever permitted)
All majors must take these courses: Microbiology 520, 521, 581 (or 581.01 and 581.02 beginning Au09), and Biochemistry 511.
- NOTE: Any student seeking to have a microbiology course taken at another institution count for Microbiology 520 must take the current Microbiology 520 final lecture and lab exams and score at least a C-. Cases will be reviewed by the Microbiology Department Curriculum Committee before a decision is made.
Other Major Courses The remaining 20 hrs. of the major (19 hr. after Au09) can be selected from Group I (at least 10 hours MUST come from this group) or Group II courses.
Courses in the major must be approved by the microbiology coordinating adviser or the microbiology honors advisor.
Also please consult an Arts and Sciences academic advisor (Denny Hall, 292-6961) for questions concerning:
- General Education Course (GEC) requirements for a B.S. degree
- Questions concerning scheduling windows and how to schedule classes in general.
- Questions concerning dropping and adding courses.
- Most other general questions concerning anything other than major course requirements.
FAQs
Q: What happens if I receive a grade below C- in one of my major courses?
A: If this is the first time you have taken the course, you must contact the Microbiology Coordinating Advisor who will post permission for you to register for and retake the course.
Q: What if I receive a grade below C- for a second time in the same course?
A: Contact the Microbiology Coordinating Advisor who will explain to you how to petition the Microbiology Department Curriculum Committee. The committee will review your case and determine the conditions under which you will be given permission to retake the course.
Q: What documentation do I need to get from my Microbiology advisor prior to graduation?
A: If you are an honors student, you will need a signed honors contract from your honors advisor. Otherwise, contact the coordinating advisor to obtain a signed Major Program Form.
Q: If I have a major course GPA of 1.99 will it be rounded up to 2.00 so that I can graduate?
A: No. If this happens to you contact your ASC academic advisor (292-6961) or the coordinating advisor ASAP to see if anything can be done.
Q: What if I took a course at another university or college that I think should be counted as equivalent to Microbiology 520?
A: Obtain a complete syllabus of the course and contact the coordinating advisor who will bring your course information to the attention of the Departmental Curriculum Committee. The committee will review your case and will likely require you to schedule a time to take a lecture exam and lab exam concerning material presented in Microbiology 520. You will need to get a grade of C- or better on these exams.
Q: Who do I contact if I have a question about what courses will count as GECs for a B.S. degree in microbiology?
A: Contact an ASC academic advisor (Denny Hall, 292-6961).
Q: I have found a lab in the medical school (dental school, etc.) where I can do undergraduate research. I would like to have this research count for Microbiology 699 (or H783) credit. Who should I contact?
A: To have the course count as Micro 699, contact the coordinator of undergraduate research. For credit for H783, contact the honors coordinator.
