  • Au/06: Cara Chiu's research objectives are to characterize a novel iron-transporter protein (Fea1) from the single-celled alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii . Cara has expressed this gene in transgenic Arabidopsis plants. Her current objectives are to determine whether the Fea1 protein enhances iron uptake in transgenic plants and if so by how much. Preliminary results indicate that the Fea1 iron transporter is more efficient at iron transport than the iron transport apparatus of wild-type Arabidopsis plants.
